Guidelines for Funding Searches on SPIN
1. Click on the ‘SPIN’ database heading on the Funding Databases page. http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp/main/?get=funding_databases
2.Select “Advanced Search” on the opening page, located on the left-hand side of the page under the heading, “Search SPIN”)The Search Query page will then open up.
3. Focus on the first four blanks of the search options chart:
First blank: Click on the term “Keywords”.
A window will pop up with an alphabetical list of search terms. Click on a general category such as “Social Sciences” and an alphabetical list of search terms will appear in the box. Holding down the control key, select all of the terms that apply to your research.
When you are done selecting these keywords in the box, choose the button, “SELECT” and the terms you selected will appear at the top of the page. Do not select “BACK” or inadvertently hit “ENTER” on your keyboard or you will lose all of the keywords you selected.
After you are done selecting keywords from each relevant category, select the “RETURN” button to get back to the search options chart.
Second blank: Click on “Applicant Types”. Hold down the control key and choose all descriptors appropriate for you.
Third blank: Click on “Award Types”. Hold down the control key and then choose all the types of funding for which you are looking.
Fourth blank: Click on “Citizenship”. Choose your country of citizenship.
4. If you like, you can further refine your search by adding terms of your choice in the blanks labeled “Title Contains,” “Objectives Contains,” or “Synopsis Contains.”
5. Choose “RUN SEARCH” at the top of the page to see your results.
